you gave him twilight's cutie mark
i think i love you
That makes way too much sense
A mortal can't become a being like that without some higher intervention. They just can't. And since all evidence points to Discord being at least an simple immortal(there are three levels of immortality:simple, advanced, and absolute) there's clearly someone else behind the transformation. At least the immortal-conjurer-of-that-level-with-mass-reality-warping-powers part. The chimeric part, well that's probably his own fault.

Explain the 3 levels of immortality, please? I looked through my library, there are no books there on the subject. Luckily, I believe you know what you are talking about.
Level one: simple immortality, AKA biological immortality. You can't die of old age, and occasionally disease. However, a bullet to the head or any other normally fatal wound would kill you. Level two: advanced immortal. You cannot die of old age, normal disease, and most weaponry. You may only die under specific circumstances. Vampires(if they weren't undead), can only die from a stake the the heart, sunlight, fire, or beheading. If they weren't already undead, they would be a prime example. Or Leshi from the TV show Supernatural, who could only die if beheaded with an iron axe. Or a shade from the Inheritance Cycle, who can only die if stabbed in the heart. The Eternals from Fablehaven. Sometimes this means only certain things can hurt you, sometimes it means you'll survive, but you'll still get hurt just as easily. Level three: absolute. You cannot die. Period. You are incapable of it. Nothing can kill you, nothing. If you were incinerated, you'd survive. Beheaded, you'd live. Even if you're atomized, you'll survive. Death in Supernatural, those Shadowrider guys who survived separation from the Dragon's Call books, ext, ext.

Ehh..... no....
Going to throw this out here for everyone to consider:…

More specifically, the following apparent deleted lines for Discord:

1. "Being a pony again wasn't exactly what I had in mind, I would hardly call this a better alternative than being turned to stone."
Probably meant for "Keep Calm and Flutter On". Note that he says "again", which implies he HAD been one before.

2. "On the contrary, I used to be quite stolid, then I got the beard."
This line would make NO sense if we assume Discord is an "eternal spirit of chaos". The line makes sense with this theory.

3. "Personally I think it's flattering that you like to dress like me."
We've never seen anypony (on screen, anyway) dress up like Discord, so it's obviously not meant to be taken literally. Who and what would he talking about then?

4. "For goodness sake, it's OMNI-omorphic, not AMNI-omorphic! Forgive me if I expected somepony who lives in a library to know the difference between A and O."
This answers the question about the previous line. Both lines would be Discord talking to a costumed Twilight in an early version of "Luna Eclipsed", which would equate Star Swirl and Discord.

5."Is that frog... an... orange? OHH! HOHOHO! And here I was under the impression that you didn't like a little creative chaos!" "I couldn't decide so I just chose a bit of everything, and wasn't it just beautiful? *sigh* Oh don't give me that look, like you've never gotten carried away with a little magic miss Twilight Sparkle."
Both of these lines reference Twilight's occasional accidents involving magic, which naturally leads to the kind of chaos Discord loves. There's also the "chose a bit of everything" in the second line, which could be a reference to Discord being a whole bunch of parts of creatures put together.

The end of season 3 provides a few clues: neither Star Swirl (according to Celestia) nor Discord (until "Keep Calm and Flutter On") knew what friendship was, and we also know that Star Swirl's research was interrupted. Because of the incomplete spell, something could have gone VERY wrong and turned Star Swirl into the being we now call Discord.

I'm going to argue that this theory was partly set up in Season 3, but will be canonized with a reveal at the end of this season. Something to do with that mysterious lockbox, I figure. :)
